Yesterday, I gave Jolie some room to chill out and feel like my home is her home. But then she wanted to see the rental Cray found. I drove her over and I have to admit, it was a nice place. Cray knows probably a lot of Kildare and has laid down ink on a majority of Kildarians, so he’d have the inside scoop on who has rentals and where.

She stuck to her bedroom most of the evening and I could feel a distance building up.

On most Saturday evenings, I take my bike and go riding into the desert. But this one, I have other ideas.

I’ve ordered in dinner for both of us and I’m just waiting for the doorbell.

I’m playing on the floor with Jess when it rings. Jolie taking a bath to relax before dinner. She jumps, but she doesn’t wail like she has the last few times. Briar Rose sits by the door waiting to see who it is.

I open and the face is a familiar one, but thankfully not Cray. But it is someone close to him. Naomi—his girlfriend. He’s probably sending reinforcements since he had to work today. And considering she’s a police officer, she’s known for her diplomatic way of talking to people. Heck, she got Cray to settle down, that’s skill.

“Hey, Kash.”

“Naomi. Come in.” I motion her forward. “What’s up?”

“I know.”

I return to the floor and crick my head up at her. “What do you know?”

“I saw Payne at the Donut Stop this morning.”

I chuckle thinking of a police officer getting donuts and the classic irony, but quickly my mood changes when I realize what she’s said. The last two days I didn’t even think about Payne and asking him and Kylie to keep their traps shut. Of course he’s an open book, so he wouldn’t even think that we’d keep the truth from Cray?

She continues, “And he asked how Cray had taken the news about you and Jolie.” Her eyes soften. “And I just knew. That’s why she’s here. That’s why you’re taking care of Jess. And that’s why I’m here.”

“I’ve got this under control.”

She squats down and smiles at Jess. “The only thing you have under control is faking it.” She motions to Jess. “Can I?”

“Sure.” She sits and picks her up, making cooing noises and Jess smiles.

I knew it wasn’t a fluke. She really smiled at me.

“So what do I need to do?” I ask.

“You need to be open with Cray. He’s going to be upset—”

“Furious.”

She rocks Jess. “For a minute, but if you stand up for what you want and the man you can be, then he’ll come around.”

I swallow. “There’s a possibility Jess isn’t mine.”

She stills, her gaze snapping to mine. “Oh, you want to find out?”

I don’t know. I can’t say the words out loud. I want to believe she is. And I even if she isn’t, I care about her. I care about Jess. I want this to happen.

The doorbell rings and I grab the food off the step.
